- Journeys in FilmWorking with the knowledge that today’s youth exist in a media-centric culture, Journeys in Film encourages the use of film in the classroom. The website offers several films that have been paired with interdisciplinary lesson plans. The organization also provides professional development and workshops for using film in the classroom.
- Wide Angle FilmsThis PBS program reports “global stories on a human scale,” giving in-depth coverage from the perspective of the people directly involved in the stories. The program’s website has a section for educators that includes lesson plans, classroom tips, and teacher resources.
- The Nobelity ProjectThe Nobelity Project seeks to educate about global issues. The organization’s documentary Nobelity speaks with nine Nobel Laureates about how to address global problems. The “Nobelity in Schools” program helps educators use the film in the classroom.
- Two Million MinutesTwo Million Minutes is a documentary about high school education in the United States, China, and India. The film follows two students from each country at the end of their high school careers to see how their “two million minutes” of high school have been used.
- California NewsreelCalifornia Newsreel produces documentaries about social issues. Many of their films look at issues surrounding racial diversity and African American perspectives. They have recently begun a series of films dealing with globalization. The films are available for purchase on the website, which also includes extensive synopses.
- The Global Film InitiativeThe Global Film Initiative supports the film production of “authentic and accessible stories created in the developing world” and their distribution throughout the United States. They have four initiatives: funding foreign filmmakers, buying rights to films produced in the developing world, ensuring wide access to foreign films, and putting together educational programs utilizing global cinema. Teachers can find discussion guides and lessons plans through the website.
- First Run/Icarus FilmsIcarus Films distributes documentaries with a global focus. They have 900 films covering dozens of topics, with synopses available on the website. Icarus also has online catalogues arranged by subject, which might be particularly useful for teachers. There is a list of websites that provide databases and film reviews.
- Third World NewsreelThird World Newsreel supports the production of films by and about traditionally marginalized groups. The films cover issues of social justice and reform, as well as globally relevant topics such as music, aging, and stereotyping.
